How many observations do people other than professional researchers contribute? Are there problems with citizen observations, and how could the observations be improved? Find out by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/laji.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">laji.fi -service<\/a> from the Finnish Natural History Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.2&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||0px|||&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.2&#8243;][et_pb_text module_class=&#8221;tehtava-checklist&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.2&#8243; background_color=&#8221;rgba(0,0,0,0)&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What kinds of observations are citizens contributing? <\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"1-1\" name=\"1-1\" value=\"1-1\" \/><label for=\"1-1\">Go to laji.fi <a href=\"https:\/\/laji.fi\/en\/observation\/list?collectionId=HR.1747,HR.447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">using this link<\/a>, to filter the millions of observations in the Natural History Museum database down to just citizen observations.<\/label><\/li>\n<li><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"1-2\" name=\"1-2\" value=\"1-2\" \/><label for=\"1-2\">Click the tab \u201cMap\u201d. You will see a grid covering Finland, which gives the number of observations for each grid cell. Find your school \u2013 are there a lot of observations in your grid cell? <\/label><\/li>\n<li><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"1-3\" name=\"1-3\" value=\"1-3\" \/><label for=\"1-3\">Above the map you see the numbers of observations and species collected by citizens for the whole of Finland. Note them down. On the right side of the screen, expand the menu called \u201dPlace\u201d. Click \u201dDraw coordinates\u201d and draw a rectangle around your school to select the observations in just that area. How many observations and species are listed above the map now?<\/label><\/li>\n<li><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"1-4\" name=\"1-4\" value=\"1-4\" \/><label for=\"1-4\">Click on the tab \u201dList\u201d to see the observations you just selected as a list. Scroll around the names of the observers in the Gatherer column. Do you see the same names repeatedly? Try picking a name and limiting your search to just this one person\u2019s observations, using the menu \u201cObserver\u201d. At the top right you can click \u201dSet filters\u201d to see which filters you currently have active and deactivate the ones you no longer want to use. When you have filtered your observations to a specific person, you can click the tab \u201dStatistics\u201d to see a summary of that person\u2019s observations. How many observations have they made? Have they made observations over several years? Do they only observe certain kinds of species, such as birds? <\/label><\/li>\n<li><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"1-5\" name=\"1-5\" value=\"1-5\" \/><label for=\"1-5\">Tip: if you want to dig deeper into your search results, you can download them by clicking the button \u201cDownload as a file\u201d. <\/label><\/li>\n<li><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"1-6\" name=\"1-6\" value=\"1-6\" \/><label for=\"1-6\">When you are done studying your selection, go to the top right corner and remove ALL the filters. Now you are looking at not just citizen science observations, but also all the scientific collections that have been uploaded to laji.fi. How many observations are there now? You can see a full list of all the collections in the menu \u201cScientific collections\u201d under Advanced. <\/label><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.2&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;49px|||||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span><b>How to make citizen science observations better <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Using citizen science observations in research is challenging, because the likelihood that a species gets observed is affected by many factors that are hard to evaluate after the fact. These factors could skew results a great deal. Neigbouring cities might show completely different observations just because the hobbyists that happen to live in each one are interested in different species.
